Every Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) school earned full accreditation for the 2026-27 school year, the district announced in its Oct. 28 newsletter.
It marks the second straight year all FCPS schools achieved the designation. Accreditation is based on compliance with Virginia's operational requirements during the 2025-26 school year and is no longer tied directly to academic outcomes, according to an Oct. 22 School Board presentation on accountability.
Superintendent Michelle Reid highlighted the results in her weekly reflections. She noted that 75% of FCPS schools earned a rating of Distinguished or Meets Expectations under Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF), compared with 70% statewide.
As we reported Oct. 27, the share of FCPS schools rated Distinguished grew from 38% last year to 56% this year.
Reid also pointed to rising test scores. Reading and mathematics pass rates both reached 80%, according to the accountability presentation. The reading rate is the highest it has been in six years, Reid wrote.
Since 2021, mathematics pass rates have improved by 19 percentage points. Science has risen 11 points and improved for four consecutive years.
What it means for Vienna families
Schools in the James Madison High School, Oakton High School and Thoreau Middle School pyramids share in the district-wide result. Full accreditation means every FCPS school met Virginia's operational standards, though the designation does not reflect individual school-level academic performance.
Special education conference set for Nov. 14
FCPS will hold its annual Special Education Family Conference at Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria. The free, in-person event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the conference webpage.
New this year, the conference opens with a panel discussion featuring an FCPS student, a high school principal, a community partner and an FCPS parent, according to the district newsletter. The day also includes breakout sessions, an exhibitor hall, a student showcase and lunch.
Registration is open, with options for childcare, special accommodations and language interpretation. The deadline for student participants and exhibitors is Oct. 30. Questions can be sent to [email protected].
Oakton athletes read with elementary students
Oakton High School student-athletes visited Navy Elementary School to read with students in kindergarten through third grade, FCPS announced Oct. 21. The cross-pyramid mentorship supports FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which includes students reading on grade level by the end of third grade.
