Hawk & Griffin, the British pub at 435 Maple Ave. W., has been serving Vienna for more than five years, and its fish and chips now cost $23.50, up from $16 when the doors opened in June 2021. The price jump tracks with a pub that has grown from a pandemic-delayed gamble into a fixture of the Maple Avenue corridor.
The pub is a partnership between two Vienna locals with different backgrounds. Michael Burgess, the British-born founder of The Pure Pasty Co. on Church Street, brought culinary credentials. Tom Kyllo, a local architect, designed the building from the ground up to evoke the Edwardian era, roughly 1900 to 1915, according to a TysonsToday profile published Oct. 27.
The name itself is a nod to the community. It honors the mascots of Madison High and Marshall High School, the Warhawks and the Griffins. Kyllo volunteers as a coach at both schools, TysonsToday reported.
Burgess's food pedigree extends well beyond Vienna. His Pure Pasty Co. became the first American bakery to win the Open Savoury Company category at the World Pasty Championships in Cornwall, England, in 2018, the BBC reported. Pure Pasty won again in 2019, followed by silver and bronze finishes in 2020, according to the bakery's website.
That championship experience shows up on the Hawk & Griffin menu. The opening lineup featured Pure Pasty's beef and veggie pasties alongside fish and chips, bangers and mash, cottage pie, Scotch eggs and Welsh rarebit. Weekend brunch includes a full English breakfast and a Scottish take on eggs Benedict.
The bar leans hard into gin. The pub's website lists more than 30 varieties; TysonsToday put the count at 45-plus. Each gin is paired with a suggested tonic. Guinness, Boddingtons and a house pilsner are on tap alongside cask ales and local and imported beers.
Inside, two enclosed "snugs" stand out. The small nooks, a fixture of old English pubs, are available for private events seating 10 to 20 or more guests, according to the pub's website. Kyllo told TysonsToday he envisioned them for book clubs, small parties or jam sessions.
The road to opening was bumpy. Kyllo had targeted March 1, 2021, but COVID-19 pushed the timeline back. The pub finally opened in June 2021 with a reservation-only soft launch before accepting walk-ins, Patch reported at the time.
Parking remains the most common complaint. The pub's own website warns that patrons who park at the neighboring Village Green Center or Wawa will be towed, and reviewers consistently flag tight lot conditions, though spots can usually be found on weekdays.
The pub is at 435 Maple Ave. W., Vienna, VA 22180, with parking lot access from westbound Maple Avenue or from Nutley Street through the Wawa lot.
