Vienna drivers should expect stepped-up traffic enforcement starting Monday, Sept. 21.

The Vienna Police Department announced on its official X account Sept. 14 that officers will ramp up enforcement against distracted driving throughout Vienna from Monday, Sept. 21 through Monday, Sept. 28. The department said residents may notice increased proactive traffic enforcement as officers work to reduce distracted driving during the campaign.

The announcement did not specify whether officers would focus on particular roads or intersections, or whether the campaign would emphasize citations, warnings or both.

What the law says

Virginia's hands-free law, in effect since 2021, prohibits drivers from holding a phone or handheld device while operating a moving vehicle. Violations carry fines under state law.

Why it matters statewide

The campaign comes as fatal crashes remain a concern across Virginia. Virginia State Police said in a Facebook post in March that the agency investigated 339 fatal crash cases in 2025. As of that March post, there had already been 55 fatal crashes statewide in 2026. No Vienna-specific crash data was available.
