Two Vienna police officers who revived an unresponsive person with Narcan have received the Town of Vienna's quarterly STAR Award.
Town Manager Mercury Payton presented the award to Master Police Officer Matthew Lyons and Police First Class David Reed, the Vienna Police Department announced on X on Monday, Sept. 21. The department praised the officers' professionalism and quick response.
The award recognizes a life-saving response the department first publicized in late June. According to a June 29 post by the department, Lyons and Reed responded to a call for service and found an unresponsive individual inside a vehicle. The officers recognized signs of a possible overdose and administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids. Within moments, the individual regained consciousness, and rescue personnel took over medical care.
The department described the response as a recent medical emergency in its June post but did not disclose the exact date of the incident. It credited both officers with quick thinking and teamwork that may have saved a life.
The STAR Award is a quarterly recognition from the town. This is the second time the award has been presented in 2026. In May, Chief Daniel Janickey and Payton honored PFC Patrick Ludwick for performing CPR on an unresponsive person during a Feb. 1 call, the department announced at the time. Rescue personnel took over care after Ludwick's response.
