Vienna police officers documented 78 instances of distracted driving behavior during a week-long enforcement campaign that ended Sept. 28.

Each driver received either a written warning or a ticket, the Vienna Police Department said in a post on X on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The department did not say how many of the 78 violations resulted in tickets versus warnings.

The campaign ran from Monday, Sept. 21, through Monday, Sept. 28, with officers conducting additional traffic stops throughout the period. The department had announced the effort on Facebook ahead of time, telling residents to expect more proactive traffic enforcement aimed at reducing distracted driving in the Town of Vienna.

That 78-violation count averages out to roughly 11 stops per day over the seven-day stretch.

Why it matters

The department cited research from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, saying distracted driving was attributed to 80% of all crashes in Virginia in 2025. The nonprofit DRIVE SMART Virginia references the same VTTI research, adding that distractions also contributed to 65% of all near-crashes the institute studied.

Those figures underscore why the department chose distracted driving as the focus of its enforcement push. Virginia recorded 499 traffic deaths statewide in 2025, according to Virginia State Police figures.

The Vienna Police Department said residents should watch for future traffic enforcement campaigns, though it did not announce a date or focus for the next one.
