The Vienna Farmers Market and the Oakmont Farmers Market in Oakton are both open through late October, giving residents about six more weeks of weekly shopping for local produce and prepared food.
The Vienna market operates every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Vienna Community Center parking lot, 120 Cherry St. SE. Its final day is Saturday, Oct. 31. The Oakmont market in Oakton runs every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Oakmont Rec Center, 3200 Jermantown Road, with its last day on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
The two markets differ in who runs them.
The Optimist Club of Greater Vienna, an all-volunteer nonprofit, organizes the Vienna market. According to FFXnow, it is the only farmers market in Fairfax County organized by a nonprofit rather than a local government or for-profit company. Vendor fees and other proceeds fund the club's charitable work, including scholarships and support for local schools and youth programs.
The Oakmont market is one of 10 producer-only markets operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), according to Patch. All 10 FCPA markets remain open for at least part of the fall season.
The Vienna market features fruit and vegetable vendors, food stalls and local musicians each week. Dog owners can take advantage of a service called "Steve's Pooch Parking," which watches dogs while shoppers browse, according to the Optimist Club's website.
Both markets can cancel individual dates because of weather or other circumstances. Organizers recommend checking before making a trip.
