Sumer Mobarak says she sat down for lunch with her children at Carnegie Diner & Café in Vienna and was told to "go home" because of her hijab.

Mobarak, a Muslim mother who says she was born in the United States, recorded the confrontation on video and posted it to TikTok and Instagram. The footage has since gone viral, drawing widespread attention to the Maple Avenue restaurant.

A post on X about the incident had drawn more than 358,000 impressions, 9,300 likes and 2,600 retweets as of the weekend. An Instagram reel sharing the footage collected more than 1,800 likes and 338 comments.

The Nerd Stash first reported that the exchange began inside the restaurant when an unidentified woman noticed Mobarak's hijab as she was being seated. The confrontation moved into the parking lot as the woman and her husband left.

In the video, the woman blamed Mobarak for the Sept. 11 attacks, demanded she remove her head covering and told her she had no right to be in the country. The woman called Mobarak an "American traitor" and said she had served in the Air Force. Mobarak responded repeatedly that she was born in the United States.

In a written post accompanying the video, Mobarak said she had tried to have a peaceful lunch with her children. She wrote: "My hijab does not make me a stranger. Your prejudice does not make this your country."

Restaurant staff sided with Mobarak during the incident, according to her account and The Nerd Stash's reporting. Mobarak publicly thanked Carnegie Diner for stepping in. No direct statement from the restaurant's management has been published.

The confrontation comes amid a documented rise in anti-Muslim discrimination nationally. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported 8,683 complaints nationwide in 2025, the highest single-year total since the organization began tracking complaints in 1996, according to CAIR's annual civil rights report.

No police report or formal complaint related to the incident has been reported. The identity of the woman who made the remarks has not been publicly confirmed, and no response from local officials has appeared in public records as of publication.
