A Spotsylvania man faces a felony charge for allegedly threatening to bomb a mosque that serves thousands of families across the Fairfax County area.

Adam Sawyer, 50, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 19, and charged with one count of threat to bomb, a Class 5 felony carrying one to 10 years in prison if convicted, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) announced Monday, Sept. 21. The Fairfax County Police Department assisted in the investigation.

The threat targeted the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center, which operates branches in Fairfax, Chantilly and Reston. Someone posted a comment on the mosque's Instagram page indicating an intent to deliver an explosive device to an ADAMS Center event, the sheriff's office said, as first reported by FFXnow.

LCSO detectives traced the comment to a home in the 6800 block of Luce Lane in Spotsylvania. On Friday, Sept. 18, they executed multiple search warrants at the address with help from the Virginia State Police and the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. The investigation stretched roughly 50 miles south from Loudoun County, Daily Voice reported.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office arrested Sawyer the following day. He has since been released on bond.

Authorities did not disclose which ADAMS Center event was allegedly targeted, the exact wording of the Instagram comment, or whether investigators recovered any explosive devices during the searches.

The charge had not appeared in online court records as of the sheriff's office announcement. Court proceedings will take place in Loudoun County, the LCSO confirmed.

The ADAMS Center's main campus sits at 46903 Sugarland Road in Sterling, just west of the Loudoun-Fairfax county line. Founded in 1983 by Reston and Herndon families, the mosque has grown to more than 35,000 members and operates six branches.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement welcoming the charges and urging community vigilance. FFXnow reported the ADAMS Center did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
