Fairfax County Public Schools is asking families and community members to weigh in on a new agreement governing how police officers operate inside local schools, with comments due by Monday, Sept. 7 (Labor Day).

The district and the Fairfax County Police Department are developing a new School Resource Officer Memorandum of Understanding to replace the current agreement, which dates to 2018. FCPS announced the comment period in its Aug. 5 newsletter distributed to all district families.

SROs are full-time FCPD officers stationed at most middle and high schools across the county. The MOU sets the rules for how those officers and school staff work together. Beginning this fall, FCPD will staff 52 SROs and four supervisors at high, secondary and middle schools countywide, according to the department's School Resource Division page.

For Vienna-area families, the agreement directly affects campuses including James Madison High School, where Officer Anthony Samaniego serves as the assigned SRO from an office near the cafeteria.

The comment window lands after the Monday, Aug. 24 first day of school, giving parents roughly two weeks of the new school year to observe the SRO presence before the deadline closes. No timeline has been announced for when FCPS and FCPD will finalize the replacement MOU after comments are collected.

Residents can review both the current 2018 agreement and the Virginia Model MOU on the FCPS SRO MOU webpage and submit comments through the same site by Sept. 7.
