Trucks will no longer be allowed to cut through Crowell Road and Browns Mill Roads near Vienna after the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a ban at its Aug. 25 meeting.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn said he initiated the restriction after residents raised safety concerns. Alcorn described the roads as winding, rural routes that were never designed for the growing number of trucks using them as a shortcut to Route 7, according to a statement on his official Facebook page.

The ban is not yet enforceable. The Virginia Department of Transportation must give final approval and post signs before Fairfax County Police can begin stopping trucks on the two roads, according to the Hunter Mill District's announcement. No timeline for VDOT's action has been announced.

Lahey Lost Valley House gets new resident curators

The Board also approved an almost 30-year lease for the historic Lahey Lost Valley House under the Fairfax County Park Authority's Resident Curator Program, according to the Hunter Mill District's website.

Michael Nakagaki and Sonja Lupescu will live in the 18th-century property rent-free in exchange for renovating and preserving it. The program pairs private residents with county-owned historic properties that need restoration work.

The house features eight rooms, six fireplaces, a slate roof, original hand-carved moldings and a standalone building once used as an artist's studio, Alcorn said in a Facebook post announcing the lease.

New planning commissioner appointed

Alcorn appointed Paul D. Thomas as the Hunter Mill District Planning Commissioner, effective Aug. 25, according to the county's announcement. The announcement did not include Thomas's professional background.

A retirement celebration for outgoing Planning Commissioner John Carter is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m.
