Virginia State Police troopers will flood all 76 miles of Interstate 66 starting Saturday with saturation patrols targeting the behaviors that kill the most drivers on Virginia roads.
The agency's Fairfax and Culpeper Divisions are running "Operation DISS-rupt" from Saturday, Aug. 22, through Monday, Aug. 24, according to a VSP press release. The acronym covers four enforcement targets: distracted driving, impaired driving, speed compliance and seat belt safety.
The operation follows a deadly stretch on I-66 near Vienna. On May 17, a high-speed crash on the interstate in Oakton killed a 2-year-old girl; an 8-year-old remained hospitalized as of late May, according to Patch. VSP listed that collision among several fatal I-66 crashes motivating the initiative, Patch reported.
What troopers are looking for
Drivers can expect stops for phone use behind the wheel, signs of impairment, excessive speed and unbuckled passengers. VSP described the effort as both an enforcement and educational initiative, timed to the start of back-to-school and college season when traffic patterns shift. The agency did not name a commander or spokesperson for the operation in its release.
February results give a preview
VSP ran the same operation on I-66 in February. That round produced 53 reckless driving citations, 53 distracted driving citations, 66 speeding tickets and four seat belt violations, according to VSP data reported by Patch.
The agency's stated goals: zero fatal crashes during the enforcement window and a 10% reduction in total interstate crashes statewide for 2026.
Why now
The numbers are grim. Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 15, 443 people died on Virginia roadways, according to VSP preliminary data. Last year's full-year total was 499 deaths. If the current pace holds, 2026 will far exceed that figure.
I-66 cuts through the heart of Northern Virginia's commuter belt, and Vienna residents use it daily for work, errands and weekend travel. The operation covers the full interstate, from its terminus in Fairfax County through the Shenandoah Valley.
Residents can reach Virginia State Police dispatch by dialing #77.
