A pedestrian was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries on the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 11, after being struck by a vehicle steps from the Vienna Community Center, according to the Town of Vienna Police Department.
VPD spokesperson Cherylyn Thompson told FFXnow that officers responded to the intersection of Park Street SE and Cherry Street SE at approximately 1:22 p.m. after a witness called 911 to report what appeared to be a hit-and-run.
The department shut down Park Street immediately so officers could investigate and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue could reach the injured pedestrian safely. Thompson said "many" officers responded.
The Town of Vienna Police posted on X warning residents of "a heavy police presence" between Locust Street SE and Moore Avenue SE, describing the situation as an active investigation related to "an isolated incident" with no threat to the broader community.
Driver returned to scene
Shortly after VPD posted its alert, the driver of a small passenger vehicle returned to the scene. Thompson said officers reclassified the incident from a hit-and-run to a traffic accident with injury.
"Officers will now be treating the incident as a traffic accident with injury," Thompson told FFXnow. "The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries."
Fairfax County Road Shark enforcement underway
The crash occurred as Fairfax County Police launched the third round of its "Road Shark" traffic enforcement program, which deploys officers around the clock for one week to target aggressive and dangerous driving. The first two rounds produced approximately 25,000 combined citations and warnings, WJLA reported.
What's next
VPD has not released the identity of the pedestrian or the driver, and no charges or citations have been confirmed. Additional details are expected in the department's weekly highlights report, released Friday, Aug. 14, on the Town of Vienna website.
