Senior Deylen Jones piled up 221 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns Friday, Aug. 28, powering the Oakton Cougars to a 49-7 win over Edison at Edison High School in Alexandria.

Jones' biggest play was a 99-yard scoring run that helped put the non-conference opener out of reach. The performance earned him DMV High School Football Player of the Week honors from NOTUS, Patch's Oakton newsletter reported Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The blowout marked the first victory for Said Aziz, who took over as Oakton's head coach earlier this year after serving as an assistant at Centreville High School. The Fairfax Times reported in February that Aziz had found success at multiple schools in Fairfax County before landing what the paper called arguably one of the top programs in the area. The paper described his coaching path as "one for the ages."

Aziz replaces Brian Slay, who went 4-6 overall and 1-4 in Concorde District play last season, according to MaxPreps.

DC News Now confirmed the 49-7 final in its Week 1 DMV high school football scoreboard published Saturday, Aug. 29.

The Cougars return home to face Justice at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Oakton High School on Sutton Road in Vienna, according to the team's MaxPreps schedule. Oakton then travels to Woodson at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
