Vienna-area families supporting a loved one with a mental health condition can sign up for a free eight-session course in Oakton starting Monday, Sept. 14.

NAMI Northern Virginia's Family-to-Family program meets every Monday evening from 7 to 9:30 p.m. through Nov. 2. The classes are taught in person by trained family members who have personal experience navigating mental health challenges alongside a relative or partner.

The program is listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's registry of evidence-based practices. Research shows it significantly improves coping and problem-solving skills for people closest to someone living with a mental health condition, according to a listing on FFXnow.

Sessions include presentations, discussions and interactive exercises. The course is recommended for families of people living with known or suspected mental health disorders, with or without co-occurring substance abuse disorders.

Space is limited.

NAMI Northern Virginia posted on Instagram on Aug. 24 urging families to register soon, describing the program as a starting point for those seeking information, support and connection. The organization is led by Executive Director Rebecca Kiessling, who advocates for Northern Virginia's diverse population including Spanish-speakers, LGBTQ community members and families new to the country.

The course is free but advance registration is required. Families can sign up at nami-northernvirginia.org or call 571-458-7310.
