Brendan Brown, 38, of Springfield died Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, hours after being booked into the jail that morning.
Deputies found Brown unresponsive in his single cell at 7:25 a.m., the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said in a statement. Deputies and jail medical staff began CPR immediately, and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue continued lifesaving efforts after arriving, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) said. Brown was pronounced dead at the facility.
The FCPD's Major Crimes Bureau is leading the investigation. The department said foul play is not suspected preliminarily. The FCPD, which serves Vienna and all of Fairfax County, investigates every death that occurs while someone is in the sheriff's custody.
Brown had been in FCSO custody and held at the detention center only since the morning of Oct. 8. Neither agency disclosed why he was arrested or what charges he faced.
An autopsy will be performed, per FCSO policy for all in-custody deaths.
Brown's death is the third at the detention center in 2026, according to the FCSO's news page. Two other inmates died in August. As of mid-August, at least 19 people had died in FCSO custody since 2018, FFXnow reported.
Virginia law requires that all inmate deaths be reported to the state Board of Local and Regional Jails, which reviews whether deaths can be prevented.
No timeline for the investigation's completion or autopsy results has been announced. Anyone with information can contact the FCPD's non-emergency line at 703-691-2131.
