Fairfax County residents can now pay their vehicle tax at self-service kiosks instead of waiting in line at the Department of Tax Administration (DTA) counter.

The county announced the kiosks Thursday, Aug. 27, saying the machines accept cash, checks, credit cards and debit cards. Users can also check balances and print receipts on the spot.

The closest kiosk to Vienna is at the North County Government Center, 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston. It is open around the clock, seven days a week.

Three other locations are available:

• Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax — Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Mason District Government Center, 6507 Columbia Pike, Annandale — 24/7
• Gerry Hyland Government Center, 8350 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria — Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Only personal property taxes on vehicles and business personal property taxes are accepted at the kiosks. Real estate taxes and other tax types cannot be paid there.

The timing matters for Vienna-area car owners. Vehicle tax bills are mailed throughout the summer and are due Oct. 5, according to the county's DTA website. For vehicles purchased or moved into the county on or after July 1, bills are mailed in January and are due the following February.

The county described the kiosk program as part of an effort to modernize tax systems and improve customer service, according to a post on its news page. The kiosks handle only vehicle-related taxes "at this time," suggesting the county may expand accepted payment types later.
