Roughly 1,700 Fairfax County Public Schools students walked into different buildings Monday, Aug. 24, as the district's first comprehensive boundary redraw in about 40 years took effect.

The School Board approved the plan 8-3 on Jan. 22, reassigning 1,697 students across the county after a review spanning more than a year of public involvement and revisions. FCPS worked with K-12 consulting firm Thru Consulting to shape the process. The changes eliminate or reduce five attendance islands and 15 split feeders, according to InsideNova.

For families in the Madison and Oakton pyramids, the shifts are concrete. About 128 students from the Wolf Trap area and a section of Dunn Loring moved from Marshall High School's boundary into Madison's, eliminating split feeders that had sent Wolftrap Elementary and Vienna Elementary students to different high schools. Another 172 students from the Wolf Trap area and a sliver of Vienna shifted from Kilmer Middle School to Thoreau Middle School, dropping Kilmer's capacity utilization from 118% to 101% and raising Thoreau's from 91% to 103%, FFXnow reported in January.

That outcome followed a campaign by the Vienna Town Council, which passed a resolution in October 2025 opposing an earlier draft that would have moved nearly 100 northeast Vienna students to Marshall. Mayor Linda Colbert said during the fall 2025 opposition effort that the town's basic request was for Vienna children to always be assigned to Madison, according to the Fairfax Times. Superintendent Michelle Reid was described as "very receptive," and the final plan preserved the Madison assignment.

"Our real goal is to make sure that every classroom has a reasonable class size, and that each school is maximally utilized in terms of space," Reid told WTOP on Aug. 24, explaining the rationale behind the overhaul.

At-large School Board member Ryan McElveen, one of three no votes in January, told WTOP on Aug. 24 that the reassignments amount to "reshaping communities, determining friendships that may last a lifetime, connections that will sustain them through joy and hardships alike."

Elsewhere, 201 McLean High School students were reassigned to Langley High School, cutting McLean's capacity from 109% to 100%. A separate change addresses overcrowding at Coates Elementary in Herndon. Some students may opt to stay at their previous school depending on the grade they are entering, per FCPS's phasing policy.

The district plans to review boundaries every five years going forward, with recommendations for additional areas expected by January 2027. Closer to home, the Briarwood Trace and Briarwood Farms communities near Oakton High School have been flagged for a boundary review in roughly two years, once the district assesses how the new western high school in the McNair area affects Oakton enrollment.
