Vienna-area voters must register or request a mail-in ballot by Friday, Oct. 23, for the Nov. 3 general election.
Oct. 23 is the last day to register to vote, update a registration address or apply for an absentee ballot, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. In-person applications must reach the general registrar by 5 p.m. Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m., according to Patch.
Voters who miss the deadline can still register in person and cast a provisional ballot through Election Day. The local electoral board must approve provisional ballots before they are counted, according to the Virginia Department of Elections' same-day registration page.
Early voting runs through Saturday, Oct. 31
Early in-person voting has been open since Sept. 18 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, at 16 locations across Fairfax County.
Three sites have been open since September: the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax, the Mount Vernon Governmental Center at 2511 Parkers Lane in Alexandria and the North County Governmental Center at 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston. The Government Center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The Mount Vernon and North County sites are open 1 to 7 p.m. weekdays.
All three locations also offer weekend hours. Hours on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 31, are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25: noon to 5 p.m.
Thirteen additional sites opened Thursday, Oct. 22, including the McLean Governmental Center at 1437 Balls Hill Road and the Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library at 7584 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church. Those satellite locations are open 1 to 7 p.m. weekdays and offer the same weekend hours, according to the Fairfax County Office of Elections.
Voters must cast early ballots in the locality where they are registered.
What to bring
Voters need an acceptable photo ID or can sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. A driver's license, even an expired one, qualifies. Student IDs, passports and employer IDs also work.
Voters who arrive without any ID and decline to sign the statement can still cast a provisional ballot.
Election Day and mail ballots
Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3 or dropped off at designated locations by 7 p.m. that day. Fairfax County voters can return ballots by mail, in person at the polls or at the ballot drop box outside the Fairfax County Government Center, according to Patch.
Early voting in Fairfax County is running well ahead of 2022 levels. The county had recorded more than 62,000 early ballots as of Oct. 11, a 128% increase over the same point in the 2022 midterm cycle, according to FFXnow, citing WUSA9.
Voters can check their registration status and find their Election Day polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal.
