Deer-vehicle crashes in Fairfax County spike between October and December. The Fairfax County Police Department is urging Vienna-area drivers to stay alert during the three months with the most collisions.
The department issued a seasonal advisory on Tuesday, Oct. 6, warning that more than half of the county's annual deer crashes happen during fall breeding season. The advisory covers the Vienna, Wolf Trap and Oakton areas. Drivers should be especially cautious during early morning and evening hours, when deer are most active.
County data shows the pattern. Between January 2009 and December 2025, November logged 494 reportable deer-vehicle collisions, the highest of any month, according to a Fairfax County deer management webinar presented in August. October recorded 391 and December 101.
The trend is getting worse.
Reportable deer crashes countywide rose from 75 in 2021 to 105 in 2025, FFXnow reported in September. Four crashes since 1993 have been fatal, according to the county webinar.
The Vienna area has one of the county's densest deer populations. The Vienna Cluster of the county's archery deer management program harvested 56 deer in fiscal year 2026, the second-highest total among all archery clusters, according to the August webinar.
What FCPD wants drivers to do
The department's advisory lists several specific precautions:
- Watch for eye shine along roadsides. If you see one deer, others are likely nearby.
- Use high beams when traffic allows to spot deer at a distance.
- If a deer is stopped in the road, slow down and flash headlights. Steady bright lights can mesmerize deer.
- Never swerve out of your lane to avoid a deer. A collision with another vehicle or a roadside object is likely more serious than hitting the animal.
- Release the brake at the moment of impact. The department said this reduces the chance of a deer crashing through the windshield.
- Do not rely on hood whistles, car horns or other devices to scare deer away.
Deer management efforts in Vienna
The town is expanding its lethal deer management operations. FCPD sharpshooting in Vienna is planned at four locations for the 2026–2027 season: Northside Park, the town mulch yard, Glyndon Park and municipal property at Glyndon and Mill streets. Operations run from November through March 2027. During the program's first season, officers harvested 24 deer, 12 at Northside Park and 12 at the mulch yard, according to FFXnow.
The county's broader archery season opened Sept. 12 and runs through Feb. 13, 2027, covering more than 100 properties including parks in the Vienna area.
Drivers who hit or see an injured deer should call the FCPD non-emergency line at 703-691-2131. If a vehicle is stuck in the roadway after a crash, the department advises turning on flashers, calling police and waiting at a safe spot off the road.
