Fairfax County car owners face a Monday, Oct. 5 deadline to pay their personal property tax bills without penalties.
For Vienna and Oakton residents, the county is accepting check payments at the Oakton Community Library book drop through Oct. 5, according to Fairfax County's tax administration page and a Patch summary of the county's guidance.
Book drops at select county libraries began accepting payments Monday, Sept. 14, according to the Fairfax Times. Patch reported the Oakton library's start date as Saturday, Sept. 19. Which date applies specifically to the Oakton book drop is unclear from available county records.
Other ways to pay
Online e-check payments carry no fee, according to the county. Residents can also pay by phone at 703-222-6740 (TTY 711), by mail, or in person at the Department of Tax Administration office in Suite 223 at the Fairfax County Government Center.
Four new self-service kiosks also accept car tax payments. The kiosks take cash, checks and credit cards, though they currently process only personal property tax payments. They are located at:
- Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax
- Gerry Hyland Government Center in Alexandria
- North County Government Center in Reston
- Mason District Government Center in Annandale
The Reston and Annandale kiosks are available around the clock because they sit inside district police stations. The Fairfax and Alexandria kiosks are open during regular building hours.
Before the kiosks were installed, residents who wanted to pay car taxes in cash had to visit the customer service counter at the Government Center. The kiosks eliminate that requirement at all four locations.
The county also notes tax relief programs for seniors and people with disabilities on its tax administration page.
