Eataly will open its first Washington-region location at Tysons Corner Center in 2027, bringing an Italian food hall and marketplace to a mall about three miles from Vienna's town limits.

The New York-based chain confirmed the plans in a press release reported by Northern Virginia Magazine on Tuesday. Eataly will take over a two-level space in the former American Girl store at the Macerich-owned mall at 1961 Chain Bridge Road in Tysons.

The location will include seated restaurants, quick-service counters and a specialty market selling made-in-Italy products, according to the Northern Virginia Magazine report by Debbie Williams.

No other Eataly has operated in the D.C. metropolitan area. The nearest existing location is in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

About the chain

Oscar Farinetti founded Eataly in Turin, Italy, in January 2007, converting a closed vermouth factory into the first store. The chain now operates 69 locations across 16 countries, with 20 in the U.S. and Canada. American stores include locations in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas and Las Vegas.

Eataly's Manhattan flagship near Madison Square Park opened August 31, 2010, spanning more than 50,000 square feet. Two weeks after opening, lines still stretched down Fifth Avenue.

What Vienna shoppers should know

Tysons Corner Center has long served as the primary regional mall for Vienna-area residents. The Eataly addition will be the mall's largest new food-and-dining tenant announcement in recent memory, occupying a prominent two-level footprint that has sat empty since American Girl departed.
